A boy & a hat

The Boy has been begging me to make him something for awhile now. Although I have made him a couple of things, since he's been a 'big boy' I have not.

Well, here is the lovely knit hat I was able to whip up in a couple of days. NOW he says it's too itchy. Go figure. It's cute, anyway. I do have plans to make him something in the pattern in something other than wool.

Handmade Holiday

This isn't a new idea. A few years back I took the Handmade Pledge and when I shared it with my husband we made it our family tradition to give handmade gifts. This year I've decided to make another 'official' declaration of more of the same! :D

I've been working on gifts already. The children already know about them. They've gone with me to pick out yarn and such. But this year we're hoping to extend our tradition outside of our family. We may end up giving some New Year gifts, but they will be handmade, nonetheless!

Wrist Warmers

So I've completed (all but the weaving in of ends) my first pair of fingerless gloves. This is the first pattern that I've done with a slot for the thumb (found pattern on Ravelry). In the previous pairs I've only left a hole for my thumb to slide out of. I an tickled with them. They don't remember match though. I tweeked the pattern as I made the second one. So it fits my hand a bit better and it longer. Also did the thumb portion a bit neater. You know how the second one is usually better than the first? lol. Well, I my frog the first one...I may knot. Now that I know what I'm doing I will definitely be making more. My girls have already put in their requests.

Yarn!

Since I'm visiting family in NC presently, I couldn't remain here and NOT visit that lovely yarn store. I lucked out as I went on the day they were celebrating their 2nd anniversary/birthday and were holding an AWESOME sale. I was only planning to get ONE skein--the one I should have gotten that last time I was there. It's 100% Baby Alpaca in orange--I got the white one last time. I also got another skein of the Jarbo Duo in a bright red mix and then a Berroco Sundaw skein which was on sale--it reminds me of someone's locs.

I have plans for each of them. Going back to get them wound and to get a second skein of the bright red mix. My Winter Solstice Gifts will be underway soon!

Here's a peek at what's on my needles currently. I found a free pattern on Ralvery.com called a Stitch Sampler Shawl. I've had this yarn for a few years now, was initially going to make a poncho for myself. Well, I'm know a third of the way finished. This shot only shows about half the width of it. It's on circular needles.

I've taken a good bit of time away from my blogs....but although I've been away, I've been creating. It's amazing just how many things I was able to crank out in the midst of packing and mothering. I guess my computer time takes a lot of my free time.

Here's a look at some of what I've made (started & completed)!

I have three others that I see I haven't yet photographed (a silvery black & white one that's spiral and two others like the green one in other colors), but you get the idea! :D I've found a lot of patterns online, worked a couple of them and then did a couple 'freestyle' (ie my way). Gave me time to practice my crochet stitches. Still learning!

I am currently working on a Stitch Sampler Shawl. It's being knitted. I'm about half-way finished with this one. Will share some pictures when it's complete!

Another Scarf

I've completed my FIRST crochet pattern scarf. As I've shared before, I'm more of a 'freestyle' crafter. I learn the basics and then go with the flow. I try new things out, collect and consult patterns.....then create from there.

I decided that I should try to follow a pattern so I can learn how to read a crochet pattern, being that I'm still new to this and all. I found this pattern on Ravelry. I now understand why my girlfriend says she's a "pattern-ho". It's easy to collect patterns, so many choices and styles.

Anyway, this pattern is called Cascade Scarf (it's a free pattern by Lion Brand Yarn)....not bad for my first one, eh? I've already gone through my stash and will be making another one tonight. Gotta love crochet--it's quick!

Fresh Off the Hooks!

Earlier this year I purchased some chunky baby alpaca yarn (IT'S SUPER SOFT & WARM) at a lovely yarn store (aren't they all?). Since that time I've been deciding exactly what to make with it. I settled on a scarf--simple and easy. Instead of knitting it, I chose to crochet it. I think the pattern I 'freestyled' as nice and was able to complete it in just under 2 hours!! (yeah, that the main reason why I chose crochet over knitting)

As I was making it, my son asked me to make him one, which is a big deal (to me at least) as he's never asked for something handmade from me (although I've made him several things)! I looked through my stash and found the baby alpaca yarn that I purchased on Ebay months before his birth. I was able to make him some booties of out that yarn, but that was it. I'm must completed his scarf and will be starting on a matching hat.

It's rather hot still....but Winter is coming! My plan is to have everyone 'hatted' and 'scarfed' up before the cold winds blow!

I usually see posts about "What's ON your Needles?" When I browse crafting/knitting/crocheting sites, this is a frequent question.

Well, I've been taking time [in this blazing heat] to knit. Yep. Knitting. I'm determined to complete my started projects BEFORE starting new ones (and boy do I have some new ones I want to start on)!

I've been waiting to post a photo of the handmade item I made until my first and only (so far) participant received it--so she'd be surprised. Today, Rana @ Free to Learn an Lovin It, got the package. I am so happy to know she likes it! There's something about seeing my work on her blog--I'm rather proud of it. You can check out her post about it here. Here's a photo I took right after making it. It's a nice and fun reusable bag.

Rana has asked me to put a tutorial together. So, I'll plan do that when I start on my next one.

Thrift Store Finds

Yes, I did it again today. It's been awhile and I've been itching to create/make/upcycle something!!!

Well, I found some lovely vintage pillow cases, several random good-sized pieces of fabric, and a curtain with a very cute pattern. I'm seeing some reusable bags and a cute tote or two for the girls (out of the curtain). We'll see. I'm going to spread things out on my create table and see what comes to me.

Well, I've finally completed the item I've been wanting to my for my participant--Rana! I'm so very excited about how it turned out. I will be putting it into the mail today so won't share a photo just yet. I've been finding time amidst all the packing to create and make. My plan is to pack up my sewing items last--I girl has to be able to create on a moment's notice, right?

New Book

My favorite cousin & best friend sent us a new knitting book. It was sent with my eldest in mind. I've been teaching her to knit and this book will give us another project to take on. It's for knitting dolls with all their clothes & accessories. My girls can't wait to get started on one, or two or three!

The List Lengthens

My roll is slowing down a bit. It's the end of the month...packing is looming ahead of me for next month. I've found some really cute projects that I'd like to try my hand at. Not sure if they were happen before the move or after we get settled again. I've decided to post them here so that I can easily find them again. Perhaps you'll find them interesting as well and have a go for yourself.

I found both these links on Whipup.net. They're good for sharing all kinds of crafting, handmade things.

The first is a reversible bag (I love a good bag!). VeryPurplePerson shares many more projects on this blog.

The next one is a pattern for hand smocking a sun dress (something I have been looking to do for awhile). Over at ikat bag there other patterns and projects shared on the blog regularly.

Then, there's the pillowcase tutorial from FilmintheFridge, yet another sewing/quilting/fabric blog. It's beautifully inspiring over there!!! I have looked through books that repurpose pillowcases for other things but hadn't thought about making my own. Hmmm....yes, ideas! :D

The post of the Strawberry Fold-away Bag grabbed my attention. Had to add it the my list! Isn't it just adorable??? It's another project from ikatbag. The entire bag fold up into this little strawberry.

Here's the re-purposing pillowcase post: pillowcases to shopping bags. This is great to do with old cases around the house (if you have them) or you can find them at thrift stores and tag sales. SpiderWomanKnits shares a few more photos and the tutorial.

So, I've added each of this to my lists of crafting/sewing/re-purposing list for this year. I'm hopeful that I'll get to at least one before the year is out! With any luck all of them! :D

MORE Fabric!!!

Look what I found at a local thrift store????

I found these over the past few days of thrifting!!! I hadn't even thought about looking for fabric. I mean, I've gotten a set of sheets that I've re-purposed but this is the first time I've found fabric in pieces large enough to make something out of! Two pieces are canvas (making some reusable bags with them), two pieces are a stretchy polyester-type (a see a halter top/dress or two), one large piece is seersucker (sun dresses or top & shorts sets for the girls), another large piece is flannel (plan to make some heating pads and give as gifts), one piece is corduroy (not sure what it will be but I LOVE corduroy!!), and the last piece is a light-weight cotton, it's actually a curtain, which I plan to make several reusable produce bags from.

Well, there's my new list of projects, which I'll mix between the list I already have going. I'm excited about these possibilities!!

Seersucker Sun Dresses

I love seersucker!! It just says, "SPRING!" I got this fabric on sale and whipped up another set of dresses for the girls. I'll have to put the final touches on them in the morning, as the girls have long been asleep. Here's a peek at them...will share more when they're completely done.

I also love this pattern--very easy! Only two pieces for this particular dress. (Notice, they're sleeveless) I did get some more patterns that I'm planning to try over the next week or so. I found some really nice material at the thrift store. I'll wash it up and then cut out some more play clothes for the girls! I'm ahead of the game (so far that is!) LOL!

Some Sewing

I made time today to whip up these two cute sun dresses for my girls. I went to the fabric store and found a wonderful sale!! YAY! I got several new pieces of fabric (I know) but will be using them over the next two weeks to update the girls' summer wardrobe.

A Simple Sun Dress

In the midst of all my decluttering, I woke up with the desire to sew. And so, I did! Here's what I made:

It's for my pretty girl. I need to run to the fabric store to pick up two buttons or other artsy decoration to add to the front. But other than that it's finished!

It felt good to make something. I haven't done it in awhile--sewing that is. We'll see what tomorrow will bring!

Books, Books, Books!

For the past week or so I've been so busy with life (cleaning, reading, getting outside, running errand, etc) I haven't taken the time to craft. Now, I've definitely been meaning to. I guess my reading has sort of taken over my evenings.

Well, I've come across several great crafting books that I thought I'd share here today. Over on Home-Grown Love I participate in Book Sharing Monday. I normally share some of the books my children are enjoying as we read through our library.

If you're anything like me and enjoy books and crafting I think you'll enjoy these:

I've been wanting to make one of those felted bags like on the front of this book. There are also a few other easy looking projects to do (scarves and hats).

This is the sequel to the book One Skein by the same author: Leigh Radford. I'm eyeing a few projects in here as well: a Cravat, a pair of fingerless gloves (love them!) and some placemats (think they'll be a cool addition to my table).

A friend of mine shared this book with me as she knows I like to do a bit of sewing. This is perfect for using up all those little bits of fabric I haven't quite used yet. I also like that this is a hidden spiral bound book so I don't have to totally destroy it to use it! :D

I have a few things I'd like to do/make. Right now I'm about to sit down and knit while my kids watch a video (they've been good most of the day). I am sticking to my "complete a project before starting another" mantra I've started for this year. So far, so good! :D

Another Finished.....

I can't say "project" as I'd like to, simply because it was just a random thing i decided to do last night as I watched a movie with my hubby. On my little break, my mother taught me to crochet a bit, I say a bit because I'm sure there are more things I have to learn. That being said, I've been wanting to keep up what I've learned so far and because things whip up sooooo quickly, I've already completed another scarf.

When I say this yarn it immediately jumped at me--so I had to get it! LOL! It's varigated and is light blue, medium blue, dark blue, gray, med. gray, charcoal, tan mix. Works perfectly well with everything I wear--blue, black, brown (khaki).

I'm loving it! I still have a good bit of yarn left and am thinking about making a hat to go along with it. Yeah, I know it's Spring...but Winter will come again! (smile) Unfortunately this is where my limited skills of crocheting come into play as I don't know that much to crochet myself a hat. I plan to take a look on Raverly for a pattern--but may fall back on my knitting skills and knit one instead. We'll see.

It's a Wrap!!

...and just like that...I'm finished with my third and final preemie hat!

After making the first one I decided that I'd make one for each of my (near) full-term babies God blessed me with. It was a lot of fun and once I got the hang of all those needles in my hand, it was a breeze!

With every stitch I prayed for the preemie and family who would receive it. Prayed for health, contentment, happiness, hope, strength, peace--no matter what.

It's it just the cutest little thing?? I hope to do this again...soon!

Last night I knitted a second preemie hat following my own pattern (smile) and finished it within 2 hours! YAY! (must get photos of it to share...will do that later today!) I used size 8 needles and a chunkier yarn to speed up the process. Planning to do one more by the weekend.

Today I got a chance to visit a local yarn shop. Can I tell you I just LOVE being in yarn stores? Looking at the yarn, touching the yarn, feeling the yarn. Each one I've visited has its own personality, but each share the same inviting spirit: the come sit down and create something special feeling. I think I spent at least and hour and a half just looking and feeling and thinking and deciding. I finally settled on some yarn: 100% Organic Baby Alpaca and a varigated wool blend. I also treated myself to some bamboo needles.

I asked the attendant if I could take some photos of her place. She happily agreed. Here's just a bit of the store and the lovely yarn I finally settled on!

I am so happy to share that I've finished knitting the little preemie hat I've been working on. After frogging the whole thing last week, I managed to restart and get it done (all but weaving in the ends). I found another pattern that has worked out well. It's my first time knitting with 5 needles--and this thing was small!! I think it's good for a first time. I'm planning to do another one. Will post pics soon!

Oh, and I also learned to crochet while on my little break (from my real life). I crocheted a scarf in about 3 1/2 hours!! Very tickled about that. Yeah. The photos will be up soon! :D

Update: Preemie Hat

Ok. So I made it almost to the end with this cute little hat. Well, until things got all messed up. I doubled checked the pattern but things weren't adding up (or decreasing to the # of stitches required/stated) as the pattern said they should. My cute little pattern started looking totally a mess. I got very frustrated. Some bad words were uttered. I frogged the entire thing!!

Yes. It's the perfectionist in me. And I'm desperately trying to recover from all of that.

Anyway. Today is a new day. I am beginning again.

Progress::Preemie Hat

So after purchasing a new circular needle I found out that it was still too long. So, I've had to use four needles. Once I got over the "oh my! how will this work?" feeling--which only took one round, I settled into it and am really enjoying this. I'm excited about how it's turning out and can't wait to knit myself some socks or wrist warmers or gloves (something that requires knitting in the round)!

I think it's coming along nicely. I'm hoping to be finished by tomorrow--if all goes as planned! :D

Knitting for a Cause Part 2

Well, I made it out to pick up some new yarn. I sat up and made balls of both the skeins I got. I'm loving the softness and the color(s) of both. I even treated myself to some new needles (as if I need more...shhhh don't tell the hubs).

I've looked through a few patterns and settled on a basic ribbed hat by Carissa Knits. I need something simple to start with. I'm also going to use circular needles instead of double-pointed ones. They still scare me. I really want to make some socks this year so I think I'll try them out on something that doesn't have a deadline! :D Hopefully I'll get it done by the weekend. I'll keep you posted!

Knitting for a Cause

My dearest childhood friend send me an email this morning. Her sweet daughter, Grace, has a birthday this month--she'll be four. After getting over the fact that our children are truly growing up, she reminded me that Grace was a preemie. I remember that time, of praying and hoping. My friend was blessed to be able to bring her sweet baby girl home after three weeks in the NICU. She has always promised herself that because of all the love and support of the nurses and doctors there that help her through a very tough time she'd give back each year around Grace's birthday. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened--until now! She's ask me (along with her other friends) to join her in knitting some preemie boy & girl hats for others who are going through this now.

I am so in!! I'll be wading through my stash for some super soft yarn, look through the pattern she shared in the email, right now I'm checking out the patterns on Carissa's blog--Carissa Knits (or online--Ravelry specifically) and get started. I'm going to make two. One for a girl. One for a boy.

Knitting Lessons

Today I am beginning my 6-weeks of giving knitting lessons. It was one of the gifts I gave for the holidays--part of my 'handmade' gift giving! (smile) At the present moment, I'm feeling very confident. This is primarily because I will be teaching my daughter and one of her friends. I've made a few copies of written directions and some pictures so they can practice between lessons. I've already given them both a set of the Lion Brand children's knitting needles and a skein of yarn. I am hoping that my instruction will be clear and easy to understand. I'm also hoping that things will go smoothly and we'll have a lot of fun!

Since I came from an education background, I'm feeling like I need to jot down a lesson plans so I can make sure we cover all the basics (and I mean basics) over the next 6 weeks. Today will be the 'boring' lesson--we'll go on and get that out of the way. I'll talk about needles and equipment, types and textures of yarn (I have an example of most all of them and will take my Knitting Bible to show them the two I don't). Then we'll roll their skein into ball and learn/practice casting on. I think that will be enough for today's lesson. I'm also planning to bring several of my knitting books for them to simply look through and see just what kinds of things they'll eventually be able to do. We will also plan their first project. I'm thinking I'll suggest they each make a dishcloth or wash cloth.

My dh, who is an educator as well, has a student who has been asking me to teach him to knit as well. But he's such a busy guy--being a senior and all. :-) He finally has some time available, so we're planning to get together this afternoon. I don't want to make him feel childish or girlie, so I'm going through my stash to find him a pair of needles (instead of giving him a set of the children's needles) and some yarn a bit more masculine. He seems to have the confidence to do it and we've already had the conversation about boys/men knitting! Perhaps I need to write down a list of sites that he can search online on his own to see other men and get more ideas. Yeah. I think that will be a good idea. Well, let me get to it then!

Patchwork Quilt Update

So this week ended up being a "sick week" for me and the kids. The hubby is just now coming down with it. So, I've only looked once at the quilt I've started. Hopefully I will have time and energy to get it finished in the next week or so.

Projects & Lessons

For Christmas I gave handmade gifts. One of the gifts I gave, to a friend's daughter, was a coupon for some knitting lessons (along with knitting needles and a skein of yarn). I've been looking for some easy projects to start her on, as she's learning and come across the book, Kids' Easy Knitting Projects by Peg Blanchette.

Along with step by step 'how to get started' information and images, there are several nice little projects to make as one learns and practices knitting and purling. I'm making plans to start as early as this Thursday but at least by next Thursday. I've never taught knitting, but, I'm a teacher that knits. lol. Hopefully this will work to my benefit (and those who are learning from me--my daughter and her friend).

My people gave me two new knitting books as gifts. I'm guessing that my children are going to want some of these matching hats and gloves...and perhaps the hubby wants some socks?? I've NEVER tried my hand at socks, so I'll have to make plans for making a pair. I've already looked through and read the directions and they do seem easy....we'll see!

I'm also planning to finish my daughter's patchwork quilt for her bed. I finished the patchwork part a month or so before she was born....I knew I wouldn't have the time once she arrived. But now she's almost 5 (shhhhh!) and I think I ought to finish it. I have plans for a quilt for my son's bed as well. I've been saving old jeans/denim outfits to make a denim and fleece rag quilt. I'm hoping to have it done by next Winter.

In looking through my fabric I've decided that I MUST make a few sun dresses this year and a pair or two of overalls for each of my kids. I was able to do this a few years ago...when I only had one. They all LOVE the outdoors and being covered in earth. Having overalls on made clean-up, of her, easier. I may try my hand at Fall/Winter coats again. I completed a really nice on for The Boy, but never finished the one for my oldest girl.

My grandmother received a Latch Hook rug to complete for Christmas and asked me if I'd do it for her. Of course I agreed, since this will give my a chance to teach my oldest. Yet another project to tackle.

Then I'd like to complete some bags for myself and others, made from recycled sweaters. I've started one already and need to complete it (they were supposed to be for holiday gifts...but things didn't go as I had hoped). Here's a photo of the one that's almost done. I'm thinking I'll fill the handles with polyfill to give them a bit more shape. I'm also considering putting a flower or something on it to brighten it up...what do you think?

Working with my hands is something that I've learned I NEED to be happy, content, fulfilled. So, I'm taking things slow, but hope to complete each of these things, plus a few more, before the end of this year. What things have you got in the works?

I hope that the new year has greeting each of you with warmth (for those in cold places) and hope!!

It didn't start as I had thought it would. We took an impromtu trip after Christmas and didn't get back until after New Years! My hope was to have this blog start off the new year with a fresh look. I had also hoped that my house would be in the same condition (fresh and new)! But alas! lol.

I did complete one of the scarves I showed you. Here it is to the left. Now to mail it to its new owner. I think it turned out nice! It's a seed stitch, K1, P1 on an odd number of stitches.

Since being on "holiday" I've started, or rather, re-started another scarf (see below completed scarf). I can't remember when I originally started it. But from looking at the pattern, it's from my beginning stages when I was experimenting more than actually following a pattern. I spent Saturday morning pulling it out and restarted it. It's a soft grey yarn and am doing the same seed stitch pattern on this one as well.

I've decided that for this New Year, I'm going to complete the project I've started or roll them back into a ball and re-start something new (i.e. more enjoyable to knit!)!

Once again, I have hopes of sewing clothes, complete quilts, finishing handbags, etc. I'm once again excited about the possibilities to create and work with my hands. I hope to be a bit more consistent this year...only time will tell! ;-)

I'm writing today, here, not because there is anyone in particular who is following this blog (I haven't been active here in quite some time) but so that when I look back I'll be able to see just what was going on with me and what I have been doing!

Surprisingly enough, despite all that has been going on in my life, I've found a bit of time to knit. Now, I have not finished projects (smile) but I do have a few that I'm working between in times when I have both hands free!

I've also been teaching my oldest daughter to knit. She recently turned 7 and I promised her that when she was 7, I'd teach her to knit. She's working on the 'knit' stitch, and doing very well!

I'm also working on a few holiday gifts and pulled out/dusted off my sewing machine to assist me in the venture. In the event that one of my family members/dear friends just happens to check this blog, I'll refrain from sharing pictures or any description of these projects, as I'd like them to be pleasantly surprised when they receive them! (hint, hint!)

I also have a few other ambitious projects I'd like to complete before Christmas as well. Since we've been doing handmade gifts in our immediate family for the past 7 years, I've been trying to come up with what I'll give my children and husband this year. I think I've posted photos of last year's gifts--oh, wait, that was two years ago now. (Shaking head--time is really moving!) I'll have to post photos of last year's gifts. DH and I found some less than perfect bookshelves and rebuilt them and painted them for the kids last year.

Anyway, I'm wanting to make some skirts for my 4 yo daughter--she LOVES being in dresses/skirts. I'm also thinking that I'd like to make something like this (see photo below) to hang over both girls' beds. Now to think of something for the boy. Perhaps something to hold/hang his ever growing dinosaur collection. Hmph...need more thinking time. Oh! he has been asking for a "King Hat" (a crown) so perhaps I'll make one of those! We'll see.

I've also been spending a good deal of time blogging on my other blog: Home-Grown Love. I am giving myself permission to take care of myself in all the necessary ways. So, with that in mind, I hope to share something at least once a week here...starting in the new year to help me get back in the habit of crafting--making things with my hands!

Black Furry Wrist Warmers!

This are so very soft and beautiful! I used a strand of black eyelash and one of a black chunky acrylic. BEST of all, I completed them in just two hours!!!! Yes, I had to wait until the children were in bed. I whipped them up on large-sized needles, alternating between a US19 and a US15. My very own simple pattern: CO 15 and did about 20 row in knit. I'm really like them. Not sure if I'm going to part with these! :)

For the next pair, I'm going to work in the round using 4 needles (UGH!!!). I'm a bit scared of this, since this is something I've never tried! But as I've learned from past experiences, what often scares doesn't bite! So, off I go to get a set of double-pointed needles.

So I've been deciding just what to create with all this fabulous yarn! It's so soft! I was surprised! With a remnant piece of black eyelash, I'm making myself another pair of wrist warmers. I've added it to some chunky black cotton yarn so they should be soft and warm!

What a Deal!!!

I got the BEST deal on yarn just the other day. I responded to an ad on craigslist. I wife wanted to get rid of her husband's stash of yarn. Yes, I said husband!! He's a knitter! Anyway, she showed a picture of the trash bag stuffed with yarn and offered it for $15. When I inquired I was pleasantly surprised that it was still available and that there were about 30 skeins of yarn and remnants. I quickly made arrangements to pick it up ASAP!!

Now, for those of you who do anything with yarn and purchase it regularly, you will know that $15 will get you about 3 skeins at a craft store (Michaels, JoAnn Fabric, etc) or only 1 skein at an actual yarn store. So the fact that she was willing to sell 30 skeins for $15 was a steal!!!

It really didn't matter to me what the yarn was like...since I'm looking to make gifts as well as sell some of them!!! After getting the bag home and putting the kids I sat on my couch and went through my treasure!!! And let me tell you....there were 50 [yes, i said 50] new, never used skeins of some of the nicest yarn!! All those frilly-make-you-look-pretty-yarns! Not only that, there were about 15 partial skeins and remnants, a few knitting needles and crochet hooks (as if I need any more of those--you must see my stash!) and a nice pair of scissors.

I can't even believe that I found this....but am so very thankful!!! So this gives me the 'start-up' yarn I need to begin my projects for our (Emilie & my) online boutique!!! [Yes!!! We're going to do that THIS year people!!! Stay tuned for more details!!!!]

Wrist Warmers

I'm so excited!! Last night I completed my first pair of wrist warmers! Found a very simple pattern online...changed it, of course, and created these (see picture)! I knitted the both at the same time so thy would both be complete at the same time. For you without children, it should take about 4 hours. It took me two days, still not bad!

They are my trial run so I didn't use any fancy yarn. But I'm very pleased with them!! I'll try a different pattern and yarn on the next pair!

Projects!!!

So right now I've been going through books and magazines again deciding upon my next big project and a few small ones. I've started another scarf and since I've completed by 9 month in the making blanket for my son, I think I want to start another long project. We'll see!

I made the girls hats and scarves again this year. I wanted to do some mittens, but those haven't appeared yet. Knitting with more than two needles is a bit scary, so I'll wait a bit more before I try.

Three Christmas' ago, Melvin and I decided that we would make the gifts we give as to cut down on all the expense of the holiday as well as make the gifts more special and meaningful. This past Christmas (2007) I made a reversible tablecloth and matching seat covers for the girls' table. It was patchwork and turned out lovely! You'll have to take a look at the pictures. I want to make some napkins for my table and a few place mats. I'm thinking of embroidering them and even allowing Jaya to help with that. She's five now and I think it's time for her little hands to learn to sew!

I've made my son a fleece coat/jacket and am planning to make one for Jaya. Kari is swimming in coats for now. I do want to make something special for her. She loves to color orange so I'm looking for some really nice orange yarn. I'm thinking that I'll knit her a poncho.

So, these are just some of my hopes for this new year! I'll keep you up-to-date with how things a taking shape!

Welcome to 2008!

Yes, it's been a hot minute since last I posted here. Please forgive (for those of you who have been anxiously awaiting to hear about all the things I've done, etc).

I've been busy packing, moving (yes, again), unpacking, sorting, reading, entertaining, problem-solving, etc. during my absence. I am happy to report that although I didn't get to all the projects I had hoped to last year, I was able to complete several handmade gifts for the holidays! I have decided that since I don't get much time with three little ones running around, that I will be starting gifts NOW so I can give more this coming holiday season!

The new few posts will be descriptions of the items I've made with pictures! I've also taken to decorating our new home! Fun stuff!

What's Going On?!

So it's been exactly a month since last I posted. Yes, mama's been busy over here! :)

Fortunately or unfortunately, I haven't had much time to knit. I have, however, checked out a dozen or so knitting books from my local library and have found some GREAT patterns/ideas for gifts!!! I've compiled a nice file of them and will begin knitting, after picking out some really nice yarn. My plan is to start my holiday gifts in April. Perhaps I'll have a few completed to give this year! :)

I'm really excited to be able to make gifts to share with family and friends....and hopefully, if time [and my children] permits, you will be one of the recipients of my handmade creations. [Em, it's time to get our logo together!!!]

I'm going to post a few of the books that I've found some nice things in, for those of you who may be interested in finding quick and fairly easy patterns! And don't forget that your local library is a great [free] place to find the newest books as well as some older ones with good ideas.

What's Been Going On?

Since starting the hat and working on the blanket (shown in previous posts), I've been checking out new patterns by checking knitting books out from my local library! I've come across some really nice things that I hope to get to during this year. Hopefully by March I will have my list of things to make for family and friends complete and be able to begin on these gifts. And if I'm lucky, you'll have something from me--handmade--for Christmas, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa (whatever you celebrate during that time of year!).

For those of you who knit, or are interested in knitting, here are some of the books that I've checked out. I'm only sharing that ones I've actually found things inside to knit. A lot of them are 'good idea' books, but I'm realizing that I'm still a beginner when it comes to knitting. I've also learned that when books read, "Easy Knits" or "For the Beginning Knitter," they are still more advanced than my skill. There is still so much I must learn. I must find a knitting mentor, like my cousin has! LOL!

Easy Knitted Accessories by Jeanette Trotman (really nice things to knit and they're listed by skill level, so 'easy' is a relative term in this book!) :)

Odd Ball Knitting (great ideas for how to use random balls of leftover yarn; not all practical though)
1000 Great Knitting Motifs by Luise Roberts (good ideas for adding color/pattern to your knitting)

Well, I've just picked up some new ones from the library today and I need to go through them and see what else I can find that's quick and easy--but nice! Perhaps I'll get some knitting time in this Thursday!

Yarn, Yarn Everywhere!

Again, I have to try the 'more difficult' things! Somehow doing something simple isn't much of a challenge! When I went to my first meetup with the 'Intown Knitters' and shared with them that I was making my scarf with 5 yarns they all gasped! That surprised me--their gasp. One lady asked, "So you're carrying around 5 balls of yarn?" I quickly said no and explained that my yarns were already spun together. But it made me think, "so what's so difficult about carrying around 5 balls of yarn?"

Well, I'm not carrying around 5 balls, but I am carrying around 3. I figured three would be enough to start with! And, to my surprise, it's quite easy...so, I'm already bored with this project! It's a simple pattern, one my cousin, Emilie, shared with me. So between all the other FUN projects, I'll work on this one! It will be a blanket when it's finished!

It's a diagonal blanket pattern. I've started at one corner of the blanket with 5 stitches, increasing each row until I get to about 210 stitches, then I'll start decreasing until I'm back at 5 stitches. See, it's simple.

Knitting In the Round

So here are the beginning of my first hat using circular needles....I will be "working in some color" with this one as well! :)

I made it around five times without twisting it, so hopefully I'm good (meaning: hopefully I won't twist it OR, better yet, perhaps it's impossible to twist it now)!

Working in Some Color!

I started a hat for Kari to match her scarf on the 22nd. I decided to play around with some color since Megan (Atlanta Intown Knitters Member) told me it was "simple." And she was right!!! I tried my own pattern (I'm composing now!!) as I worked in a bit of color. I completed the hat in the wee hours--1 am--of the 24th (today)! I guess I'll have to make this a complete set by knitting some mittens--something else I've never done!!

We'll see...I've already started on another hat using circular needles so I can "knit-in-the-round" for Melvin (the baby) as well as a blanket using three seperate balls of yarn (much easier than I thought). Jaya asked me when I was going to make her a matching hat. So I'll be doing on for her as well.

Something I realized when doing this first hat (for Kari)--the hat pattern sizes don't take into account hair styles other than "hanging down straight" so I must make adjustments for "thick hair in braids" and "thick hair with barrettes." :)

My "Happy New Year" Scarf

In November '06 I started on a scarf for myself. I used some yarn that I purchased from an ebay store about a year and a half ago (or more). Isn't it lovely? It's 4 strands spun together: white, black, tan and gold. This was my first 'pattern' scarf that I've made. I used a pattern I found in Knitting for Dummies called Faggot Lace and created this scarf with it!

I finally completed it, adding fringe, the first Thursday of the year! Thus the reason for it's name! :) Because of the colors, it goes with everything! The yarn is so soft and warm--just in time for the dips in temps we're experiencing now!

I've just started on another 'longer' project with some fabulous yarn I purchase from the same ebay store. This is 4 strands spun together: 2 strands of black, a 2 strand of white & black spun together, and another 2 strand of silver and white spun together! (Actually 7 strands but some were spun together before being spun with the other colors...if you understand?) It's very nice! Since this project is for one of my favorite cousins, I won't share what it will be just yet!

Kari's Scarf

After completing Jaya's scarf, I got things together to make a scarf for Kari. I used a simple knit one row/purl one row pattern! I knitted it in just under two hours!!! I started on Wednesday while I waited during Jaya's ballet class and completed it during a brief naptime on Thursday! The yarn matches her new coat from Grandmother perfectly!

I decided to make Jaya another scarf....since she LOVES the one I made for myself. I used LARGE needles so I could complete it quickly! I was able to knit it in 2.5 hours! Now she has a scarf (sort of) like mine! but a lot sooner!

Quilt for My Mother

I finally completed the quilt I've been working on for my mother. With little ones around, it's hard to get the time need to get it done faster. I'd been working on it since the beginning of this year--no, this wasn't my only project, just one of many!! I think it turned out nicely!

My First 'Meetup'

Last night I attended my first knitting meetup with some seasoned knitters in Virginia Highlands (Atlanta Intown Knitters). The organizer, Kim Nickels, hosted it at her yarn store, Knitch. I had never been in a yarn store! Yes, I've been in plenty of stores with yarn--but never a yarn store. Let me tell you, the yarn in this place is unbelievably WONDERFUL!!! The colors, textures, everything--simply wonderful. The yarn that is sold in other stores is basically crap in comparison to all the luxury yarns in this place!!!! Plus you can have yarn spun. In addition, the shop's atmosphere is prefect for sitting with friends and knitting!

I met a wonderful group of knitters and am looking forward to my new "mental" break on Thursday evenings! (Thanks dear for holding it down with the kids!)
